The Australian and New Zealand Brain Bee Competition

The Australian and New Zealand Brain Bee (ANZBBC) National Final competitions will be held during the ANS/AuPS 2010 meeting at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre. The ANZBBC is a competition for Year 10 high school students to learn about the brain and other parts of the nervous system. By downloading and studying resources from the Society for Neuroscience website, students begin to appreciate how research has made an impact in understanding brain structure and function and has driven treatments for neurological disease and mental illness.

Thousands of students compete each year in the competition, which takes place over three rounds. Round One is an online multiple-choice test that is conducted under exam conditions in their own schools and is held during Brain Awareness Week. Round Two consists of the State and Regional Finals in all capital cities in Australia and New Zealand, and includes individual and team events, and allows host institutions to showcase their research facilities and further inspire the finalists into careers in neuroscience. The winners of each of these finals are coming to Sydney to compete for the National titles of either Australian or New Zealand Champion in Round Three of the competition. Both winners will represent their countries in the International Brain Bee final to be held in North America later in 2010.

The brightest young minds in our countries are here to compete: you’ll be amazed with their breadth of neuroscience knowledge (they’ll certainly be able to answer questions that you can’t) so come and cheer them on at the National Finals, to be held on Monday February 1st at 12 noon in the Sydney Convention Centre.
